The 'Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension Cell' of 'SIES (Nerul) College of Arts, Science and Commerce (Autonomous)' organised an event for the World Suicide Prevention Day (10th September). I was graciously invited to speak on this theme which was titled as 'Minds in Motion'.
Attempting suicide is not just a sudden thought. It is a build up of feelings of helplessness and hopelessness; it is a cry for help that no one can hear. We are made to believe, as we grow up, that feeling or expressing emotions is a sign of weakness or shame (or both) and thus, choose to brush it under the carpet, until we are unable to do so. When these emotions get overwhelming, we feel ill equipped with the emotional and mental resilience required to effectively manage the turbulent times in our life.
Many students realised the importance of self awareness, processing emotions, reducing fear based thoughts and being solution oriented in the quest to be one's own emotional anchor.
*In no way am I suggesting that the support of friends and family does not help. However, there is a need to balance independence with interdependence. When required, seek help from a Mental Health Professional.
