Many of us may have been judged on numerous occasions, by different people with different perspectives, and often, on the basis of our gender.

To address this, I gratefully accepted an invitation to conduct a workshop for Tilak Education Society's J. K. College of Science & Commerce on 'Gender Stereotypes and Mental Health'.

This session focussed on understanding people beyond our limited views, opinions, and perspectives. Many discussed grievances that they faced regarding their physical appearance, economical background, societal expectations and how these are entangled with one's gender and the associated role.

The students were brought to the realisation that every person has stereotyped social roles that they are expected to fulfill. Being on the receiving end of these stereotypes and stigma could adversely impact a person's sense of identity and create limitations to one's own growth and development. The awareness that this is a common issue, irrespective of gender, brought in acceptance, compassion and respect amongst them.

They realised that it is not the battle of the genders, but a quest to discover their individuality and exercise their human rights.
